Saturday offers chance for area athletes to try out for Saskatchewan Summer Games

Local tryouts will take place tomorrow, Saturday, for young Saskatchewan athletes hoping to compete at the Saskatchewan Summer Games.

Creighton and Denare Beach are included in the area covered by Team North, one of nine districts participating in the Games, a multi-sport event being held this July in Estevan.

Youth athletes are eligible for the team if they are Saskatchewan residents living from north of Waskesiu to the Yukon border, and from La Loche in the west to Creighton in the east.

“54 communities are eligible to try out,” organizer Ryan  Karakochuk said. “So we are looking for the best northern kids for each sport to compete against the best athletes in other districts.”

Karakochuk said each sport has different age restrictions.

Team North will participate in basketball, volleyball, canoeing, archery, tennis, triathlon, track and field, and golf, though Saturday’s trials are only for basketball and soccer.

More trials will be held for the other sports in the coming months.

Karakochuk said Team North would likely include between 150 and 200 young athletes, and he believes a number of Creighton students would have a good chance of making the team in their particular sports.

Basketball tryouts will be held at the Creighton Community School gym on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm Manitoba time for girls, and from 4 to 6 for boys.

Boys’ soccer tryouts will be held from 3 to 5 pm, also Saturday, at the Creighton soccer field. For more information, contact Ryan Karakochuk at 306-688-2122. Athletes can register on site for both sports.
