Saskatchewan track and field athletes may have a chance to participate in a unique program in the coming months. The Hershey Youth Program is a program for youth utilizing grass roots track and field. Communities can run a local meet, or the program can act as a motivator for the instruction of track and field in physical education classes. Schools and communities can determine representatives in each event (usually two people per event) and those representatives can attend a Zone Meet (held in late May or early June). Athletes who place first or second at the Zone Meet may attend the Provincial Hershey Championships at Griffiths' Stadium in Saskatoon June 19, 2004 from noon to 5:30 p.m. Winners from the Provincial Meet could be selected to go to Hershey, Pennsylvania August 4th to 7th, 2004. Winning at the Provincial level does not guarantee a trip to the North American Finals. Winners from Saskatchewan are compared to seven other provinces and states and only one person per event is chosen from that group. A minimum of 5 athletes from Saskatchewan will be selected to participate in the North American Final. Age groups and events are as follows: 9&10 (Born 1994 or 1995) 11&12 (Born 1992 or 1993) 13&14 (Born 1990 or 1991) 50 metres 100 metres 200 metres 400 metres 800 metres 1600 metres 4x100 relay Ball throw Standing long jump The program is very grass roots in nature and some of the key features are: 1) No track spikes, or shoes designed for spikes or shoes with cleats of any kind are allowed in any event. Competitors must wear shoes. No starting blocks are allowed. 2) Participants can only participate in three events (2 running and 1 field) or (2 field and 1 running) and the relay is counted as one of the running events. 3) No fees are to be charged at any level. If you would like to be involved with the program, contact your zone contact for information on the program and the zone meet. The zone contact for the north is: Ted Zurakowski 512- 26 St. West Prince Albert, Sask S6V 4R5 Phone(Home) 306-764-6461 E-mail: [email protected] The zone meet has been scheduled for Carlton High School Track, Prince Albert, June 12, 2004.
