For the second year in a row, the Precambrian Sailing Club and the Manitoba Sailing Association (MSA) put on a very successful Sailing School in Denare Beach July 6-8, followed by the NorMan Region Championships on July 9. Last year, conditions ranged from flat calm to raging tempest, but this year we had pleasant weather and fairly steady breezes. The MSA sent us two instructors and 10 kid-size 'Vanguard Pram' sail boats. Twenty one boys and girls aged 7-15 participated. In the mornings, the course catered to kids who had never sailed before while the afternoon sessions were for those who had some experience Ð mainly kids who had taken the course last year. Conditions for the Championships on Thursday were grayish and drizzly, but there was a good breeze Ð and it was not too cold. Nine of our Sailing School graduates competed Ð together with one young sailor who came down from Sherridon. Edward Gardner displayed amazing technical and tactical skills and came out on top in the three-race series. Ania Romanowska Ð who was new to sailing and was visiting from Prince Albert Ð came second in all three races and Isaac Dufour Jarvis placed third overall. We are hoping that some of our young sailors will be heading south to Gimli later this month to participate in the MSA's sailing 'BOOT' Camp, and to compete in the Provincial Championships. We are also hoping that they will be successful in persuading their parents to buy them boats!
