The Grande Prairie Storm scored three goals in an eight minute span during the first period as they went on to defeat the Kindersley Klippers 5-3 in the opening game of the 2004 Royal Bank Cup. The three goals ended up being enough to chase starter Nathan Deobald from the Klipper cage as he stopped 7-of-10 shots that came his way in the first fourteen minutes. He was beaten by Scott McCulloch on a Grande Prairie powerplay at 6:05 and then again by Dustin Sather at 11:25. Stephan Knowles made it 3-0 at 13:51. Derek Dorsett got one back for Kindersley before the end of the period and Kevin Dziaduck was the new man between the pipes. He went on to turn aside 25 shots as he allowed a mid-second period goal from Kyle Radke as the Storm went 2-for-4 on the powerplay. Jean Bourbeau scored into an empty net for the other Grande Prairie goal. Down 4-1, Jason Fleck scored on a Kindersley powerplay at 18:31 of the second. The Klippers could take advantage of just one of their nine man power opportunities given to them on the night. Jesse Fischer made it 4-3 at 9:05 of the third; however that would be as close as they'd get. Storm goalie Jonathan Cayer was not busy as he had to deal with just 18 shots total from Klipper shooters. McCulloch was the player of the game for Grande Prairie. Casey Lee got Kindersley's honor.
