A large crowd was on hand for the 10th Annual Richard Beasley Memorial fishing derby, March 18th at Baker's Narrows. Glen Burkett had the only catch of the day with a 21' lake trout. The top five prizes for this year's derby were: 1st. - Aquavu Underwater Camera 2nd - 2HP Jiffy Ice Auger 3rd. - Propane camping gear 4th. - Sirius Satelite radio 5th. - Turkey deep fryer Richard lost his life when he was 27 in an industrial accident in the Smelter at HBM&S in 1996. The fishing derby was created by Richard's friends, Chuck Woods, Brad Welygan, Hank Kosar and Erik Nasselquist on the way home from Richard's funeral decided in his memory to hold a fishing derby as he loved to fish. Originally Richard's friends had planned to have co-workers throw in some money and buy a couple of prizes and have a get together on the ice. The winners got the prizes at the end of the day. It quickly snowballed into a community event. Now it's a non-profit organization with the major charitable donation going to Parkinson's Society of Canada as Richard's father is stricken with the disease and to date over $9,000 has donated to Parkinson's research. The organization has also supported the Dorion Simon Bursary, the Flin Flon and Creighton SPCA, the Mitkas-Hunter Foundation, and has also made donations to Parkdale Playground, Leo Lavoie Derby. In total, over the 10 years of the derby, donations to these organizations totaled over $12,000. Without the support of the people who buy tickets for the derby, it would not happen. The 11th Annual Richard Beasley Memorial Derby will take place despite the rumours saying this was the last year. As long as people support the derby, it will continue.
