Three Kings and a Kween are comp e t i n g i n t h e Manitoba High School Athletic Association's Track and Field provincials in Winnipeg this weekend. The events started yesterday as runners, jumpers, and throwers worked out their jitters in the first day of competition. C o m p e t i n g f o r Hapnot Collegiate are Riley Rachuk in the 100- metre, 200-metre, and long jump; Christina McKay in shot put andjavelin; Chase Pabianek in the 1,500-metre and shot put; and Nick Martin in javelin and the tetrathalon _ made up for long jump, 100- metre, 800-metre, and shot put. The four athletes have worked hard during both training and competition _ as did teammates earlier in the short season. Hapnot started out with 14 track and field athletes, four of which are hoping to cross the coveted graduation stage this year. With the help of coaches, determination, and hard work the athletes and resume to:competed hard during training and competitions. The athletes met in Zones over the course of the May 24 weekend in The Pas. From there, four athl e t e s a d v a n c e d t o Provincials _ Rachuk, McKay, Pabianek, and Martin. This season brought tough weather for track and field as unpredictable cold winds and snow shortened the training season. 'It was tough to get outside before the start of May,' said coach Alanna Simpson. While the athletes were able to train inside in April, the runners, throwers, and jumpers were running into complications with the ongoing badminton season. '...so there were some conflicts for athletes in b o t h s p o r t s , ' s a i d Simpson. Heading into provincials this weekend the athletes were facing tough competition. Athletes from schools within the City limits often have year-round training for the track andfield season. Hapnot athletes are often affected by weather conditions and, as it proved this year, conflicting Going into the meetSimpson hoped for the athletes to 'improve upon their personal bests' when competing. Coaching the athletes this year were Simpson, P a t t y Ko r c h i n s k i ,Jennifer Guthrie, Craig Mc Intosh, Mikayl a Gawiak, and Rachuk.
