Canada's convicted sex offenders must register with a national database under a new law that took effect yesterday. The national sex offender registry requires convicted offenders to register within 15 days of being released from prison, or if they have been ordered to register. They are also required to update their registry information if they move. The registry will be maintained by the RCMP and allow law enforcement to search for offenders by address, offence, or both. Convicted offenders who completed their sentences prior to the program's launch are not required to register. Law enforcement and government officials praised the registry, with Saskatchewan Justice Minister Frank Quennell calling it an "important investigative tool."
