Friday is the deadline to register for the Norman Winter Games, and for the second year in a row, Flin Flon is in danger of not having a single representative. As of press time yesterday, there was not one single registration from Flin Flon. At the games last year, Flin Flon was noticably absent. The Norman Summer Games were held in Flin Flon in 2004, where over 100 athletes from across the north participated. Winners advanced to the Manitoba Summer Games in Dauphin. I had the pleasure of attending the games in Flin Flon and in Dauphin, both as a coach and a volunteer, and it was an experience I will never forget. While this year isn't a Manitoba Games year, it would be good practice for 2006, when the Manitoba Winter Games will be held in Beausejour, March 6-12. In early December, Sport Manitoba announced that Norway House Cree Nation will play host to the 2005 Norman Regional Winter Games. The deadline to register is tomorrow, January 21. The annual multi-sport event will be held from February 4-6 with hockey on February 18-20. The Norman Games are open to everyone in the North in both individual and team sports in various age categories. The events featured in this year's Games include Curling Adult Co-ed (18 years and up) & Junior Curling, Boys & Girls (11-16 years), Hockey (Pee Wee "A"), Men's Basketball (18 years and up), Co-ed Volleyball (18 years and up), Cross Country Skiing (10 years and up), Boys and Girls Indoor Soccer (15-16 years), Table Tennis (13 years and up) and Badminton (10 years and up). Snow Shoeing (10 years and up) will be offered as a demonstration sport. Weekend activities will also include opening ceremonies and entertainment for the youth on Saturday. For more information or to register, contact your local recreation director, physical education teacher or the Sport Manitoba Norman Regional Office at 1-866-774-2220, extension 5 or [email protected]. You can also call Aimee Deans at 681-7542 at the Flin Flon Recreation Office.
