SASKATOON- A third period hat-trick by the Weyburn Red Wings in the final period helped them defeat the Flin Flon Bombers 5-1 on Saturday night at Harold Latrace Arena. Things started out difficult for the Bombers who gave the Red Wings a fluke goal 22 seconds in. They equalled that tally when Pierre-Luc Boucher scored on a one-timer set up by Dennis Kubat and James Pasternak on the power play. The Bombers entered the third trailing 2-1 when the Red Wings made the Bombers pay for taking penalties. Two of their three goals came on the man-advantage. Meanwhile the Bombers had at least a 12 chances, but the players simply couldn't finish. "I thought we had some glorious opportunities in the third period and again didn't capitalize," said Bombers coach-GM, Doug Stokes. "I guess it's like watching a movie for about the fifth time and the movie was the same, the ending was the same. "Opportunities were there. It wasn't that we were outplayed at all, it wasn't that we lacked work ethic," he continued. Defenceman Bradey Fidierchuk felt the power play was ineffective and that was the main problem. "I just found we had six power plays in the first period and we couldn't generate nothing from that and we only got nine shots in the first period," he said. "They scored that shorthanded goal on us. It just seemed to kill us." The shorthanded tally proved to be the winner in the second at 17:29 with the Bombers on the power play. Brendon Vertefeuille finished off a 2-on-1 by beating goalie Eric Potvin through the five-hole. Potvin, who was facing his former team, made 27 stops. "I thought it was okay," Stokes said of Potvin's play. "It certainly wasn't great, it wasn't poor." On a couple of goals, Potvin, who made the original save, wasn't in proper position to make the second stop and his defence was unable to bail him out. Heading into their game against the Estevan Bruins, the pressure was on as Stokes wanted to leave with at least a 500 record at the Saskatoon Showcase. Their next challenger was the 5-1 Estevan Bruins.
