One year ago the Town of Creighton added a new name to their staff list. And if you had of told Recreation Director Channa Senyk one month into her new job she would still be there one year later, she might not have believed you. ÒI think it was overwhelming at first. The whole job was overwhelming. But I like a challenge,Ó says Senyk, Òand I redirected my thinking to prepare for the challenge.Ó As time went on and Senyk was busy planning activities for weeks and months in advance, she realized the challenges had changed. ÒThe challenges became small hurdles and they were easier to get through,Ó she says. And even as the hurdles became easier to deal with, Senyk says the some of the real challenges were personal. ÒFor myself, it was the budget,Ó she says. ÒIt was my biggest challenge because I didnÕt understand how a budget worked, but once I understood that, it became a lot easier.Ó Aside from the budget, Senyk did have to get used to working in advance, rather than day-to-day, as the activities take time to prepare. But Senyk says she did have a lot of help from the former Recreation Director. ÒCindy (Davis) gave me a very good look into what the job would be. I had partnered with her before, so I had a good idea what she did and what it involved,Ó she says. Other than being able to work with her before, Senyk says she was left great notes on what activities usually take place when, how many people to expect and who to contact. But there were some challenges in that area as well, for other people. People get used to one person, says Senyk, and when another one takes over with new ideas and a different way of doing things, itÕs difficult for some people to get used to. Over the course of the year, Senyk says she has some favourite events that were put on. Being able to Òsee the kids at the Spray Pool and the staff running around and having funÓ during the Summer Program was one of her favourites. Another personal favourite of SenykÕs was this yearÕs Bust the Winter Blues. ÒThe number of people who came out to participate was unreal,Ó she says, considering the weather. ÒThat was the satisfaction of a job well done.Ó And the final favourite thing for Senyk was being able to see the soccer field in Creighton be finished. With one year under her belt, Senyk says she is Òin it for the long haul.Ó
