Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Ruth Betts Community School is challenging itself to help honour Terry Fox. Hoping to raise one dollar for every two kilometres left in Fox's Journey for Hope, the students and staff of RBCS are aiming to raise $1,600. Fox's Journey for Hope ended in Thunder Bay, Ont., and Ruth Betts hopes to raise money to cover the remaining 3,200 kilometres from that point to Vancouver, B.C. As part of the challenge, if the dollar amount is met or beat, teacher Gold Halpin will be duct taped to the wall in the gymnasium Ð giving the biggest contributor from each classroom the chance to throw a pie in his face. As well, principal John Clark will shave his head. As an extra incentive, the class that raises the most money will receive a pizza party. With incentives and promises on the table, the meaning of the Terry Fox Run has not been forgotten. This week, students started bringing in money to add to the collection. The school is also raising awareness as a trivia event began in the library on Monday and will run until Friday. Today, the students will put their shoes to the pavement as they have their Terry Fox Run this afternoon. Starting at the playground, the group will proceed down South Hudson St. to Phelps Ave. before making their way back to school. As one more incentive, children who participate in the walk were to enjoy a cold treat afterwards. Raising even more money, the students will be able to purchase hot dogs tomorrow. Friday is the big day for RBCS students as the totals will be tallied. Will RBCS help Fox continue his Journey of Hope to Vancouver? Along with RBCS, the students of Creighton Community School will host their Terry Fox Walk today with a hot dog sale by the Town of Creighton office to follow. Ecole McIsaac School completed their walk last week. Watch The Reminder for totals from each school.
