The 2005 RBC Royal Bank Cup committee presented cheques for $55,000 each to the Weyburn Red Wings and the City of Weyburn at council chambers July 18. Pat Maloney, co-chair of the RBC host committee, said at the council meeting he was pleased to report the May 7-15 tournament was "a financial success." "It looks like we're going to turn a profit of about $140,000, give or take," he said. The final amount won't be known until August, so the committee decided to make preliminary payments to both the Red Wings and the City of Weyburn. The remaining profits will be divided up when the final totals are known, said Maloney. Maloney noted the reason for the success of the Royal Bank Cup was due largely to the involvement of the community, from residents and businesses. "We in Weyburn staged what was probably the most successful Royal Bank Cup (ever)," said Maloney. Mayor Don Schlosser thanked the RBC host committee for their hard work and the business community for their involvement in the tournament. "It was something the whole community got behind, and we showed the people of Saskatchewan again when we decide to host something, we tend to be successful." With the Royal Bank Cup proceeds, both groups have a condition as to how to spend it: the Red Wings are to put their money towards long-term debt, and the City is to put its share towards facilities.
