Brenda Russell, Flin Flon's Director of Recreation, expressed her gratitude on Friday to hard working committee members, and the general public for their support towards the new Creekside Park Improvement Project. Committee members recently held a successful 50/50 draw which netted $2,300 that will now go towards the playground equipment. So far a new outdoor rink has been erected at the site, and new playground equipment is expected to begin appearing this summer. Also, since the rink is on a paved surface, the area will feature basket hoops and other activities in the summer months. "The outdoor rink has proven to be very popular with people of all ages," said Brenda. "This facility has certainly provided people with the opportunity to participate in healthy active lifestyles." The rink has lighting, so that people can enjoy their time of recreation well into the evening. The plan is to continuing developing the Creekside Park Improvement Project over a period of time. Phase one of the project was the paved surface and outdoor rink. Phase two will see the development of a playground area that will hopefully include a jungle gym as well as individual pieces of playground equipment. Benches and picnic tables are also being planned for the area. "Overall, the project has been very well received by the community," said the recreation director. The project committee members have applied for funding to the provincial Community Places Grant Program. They hope to hear by mid-May whether or not they will receive the funds that will go towards the playground equipment. "This project got underway through the initiative of people living in the area," noted Brenda. "They saw a need and then approached the City, and wanted to work together with the City to make it happen. "It's very encouraging to see citizens taking a dedicated interest in helping the City to make sure these kinds of projects move forward, if possible." She also mentioned that, besides the dedication of the volunteers, the project was made possible through the generous support of community businesses, organizations and certain individuals.
