Thirty members of the community walked down Main Street last Thursday afternoon in honour of Suicide Prevention Day. The walk started at Super K and Neighbours of the North park and ended at the flower bed in the empty lot beside Mugsy's Deli. The walk was to help generate awareness for suicide prevention. The message was shared that a kind hand is sometimes all that is needed. With that said, the walk participants were given a tulip bulb to plant Ð in memory of those who have taken their own lives. "We wanted a place to recognize those who have died by suicide," said Fran Labarre, a member of the Suicide Prevention Committee. Roughly two dozen flower bulbs were planted Ð as some took theirs home with them. A short prayer was attached to the bulbs being handed out that read: I thought about you yesterday I thought of you today I think about you all the time, Since you have gone away. And so I play this tulip bulb And water it with tears, I'll honour you in memory As it grows through the years. Labarre says the walk was a success. "We were really pleased with the turn out today," she said after the walk. "It was our first walk, but we were pleased with the number (of people)." And it wasn't just Flin Flon who helped to raise awareness on Thursday as other communities who have a Suicide Prevention Committees participated as well. Some communities helped by doing walks while others fundraised and had other activities planned.
