An entire town sprouted up on the frozen surface of Snow Lake, based around a large snowmobile drag race held on Saturday, March 6. Anyone driving into the town for the first time would have easily mistaken the community's location, as several hundred people bustled around the buildings, vehicles, and snow machines situated in the area of the races. The drag races were staged by the Snow Lake SnoDrifters Snowmobile Club and sponsored by a number of in and out-of-town businesses. They took place along a strip laid out and groomed along Snow Lake's English Bay. Spectators parked their vehicles along the shore side of the strip and watched the races unfold from the warmth and comfort that they provided. There certainly wasn't much or any warmth for the racers. It was a blustery day, with the snow swirling around the machines as drivers tinkered beneath the cowling trying to coax the last bit of performance out of them before pulling up to the starting line. See 'Four' P.# Con't from P.# Four abreast at the line, riders waited till the racing (Christmas) tree glowed green, then gunned their machines and rode them for all they were worth to the finish line a quarter mile down the lake. Winners in the 13 different catergories were: Stock 500: 1st Chris Chell, 2nd Mark Munroe, 3rd Neil Foy; Stock 600: 1st, Denis Adamchuck, 2nd Gord Parsons, 3rd Chris Chell; Stock 700: 1st Gord Parsons, 2nd Denis Adamchuck, 3rd Darron Timmons; Stock 800: 1st Trent Kutynec, 2nd Warren Mallet, 3rd Ken Catchway; Open Stock: 1st Trent Kutynec, 2nd Scott Smith, 3rd Robert Stoupe.
