The Government of Saskatchewan is providing Saskatchewan families with another tax break while encouraging participation by children in cultural, recreational and sport activities. Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell recently announced the launch of the Active Families Benefit. Under this new tax benefit, parents and legal guardians can claim a fully refundable tax benefit of up to $150 per year for children aged six to 14 years enrolled in eligible activities. ÒIn conjunction with the historic tax cuts recently announced by our government, the Active Families Benefit is another piece of welcome news for Saskatchewan families,Ó Tell said. ÒAssisting with these costs will reduce barriers, promote access and encourage children to participate in activities that are vital to healthy, active living.Ó ÒThe YMCA of Regina is committed to building strong kids and strong families and strong communities,Ó YMCA of Regina CEO Randy Klassen said. ÒThe Active Families Benefit provides opportunities for families and communities to enjoy recreational activities and take advantage of some of the many programs that we have to offer.Ó Families do not need a taxable income to receive the Active Families Benefit. A new schedule will be included in the General Income Tax and Benefit package for the 2009 taxation year. A wide range of cultural, recreational and sport activities qualify for the program, such as theatre and dance classes, music lessons, swimming lessons and minor league sports. ÒSport activities benefit children and teach them values that will last a lifetime,Ó Sask Sport Inc. president Ian Cook said. ÒThe Active Families Benefit program will help enhance participation and reduce barriers to program access.Ó Together with the tax reductions announced by Premier Brad Wall in October, a working family with two children in eligible activities will see their income tax reduced by $1,620 in 2009. The Active Families Benefit will take effect January 1, 2009. It will provide about $18 million in tax relief to Saskatchewan families and fulfils another campaign promise by the government.
