It's official, former Flin Flon Bomber Brett Needham is a professional hockey player. In signing with the Port Huron Flags of the United Hockey League, Needham fulfills his dream. "It feels amazing," Needham said, on his cell phone from Winnipeg, on signing his first pro contract. "I get to continue doing what I like to do Ð play hockey," he said. Needham joins the Flags in Michigan, marking the first time The Pas native plays south of the border. "It will be different," he explained. "The only difference might be the fans aren't as crazy as Bomber fans." The 6-2, 220 pounder signed on the dotted line on June 22, but the organization had to wait until now to make the official announcement. The former Bomber said he was never worried about finding a team as his agent spoke to a few clubs in the Central Hockey League before getting interest in the United Hockey League. "I'm kind of relieved that we got it done quickly," he said. His season with the Flags doesn't begin until middle of October, so Needham won't head there until mid-September. In fact, don't be surprised if you see him skating with the Bombers for a bit. Needham's role with the Flags will be the same as with the Bombers Ð a physical presence producing points Ð and he's excited. "It's something I feel I thrive in," Needham said. "I just have to play my game and make room for guys." Stan Drulia, the Flags first year coach, said his team was looking for a winger to chip in offensively who will also improve. "I think he will be an asset to us," Drulia said. A press release on the team's website said the Flags also look to Needham to provide "youthful energy" and "making room for our creative guys." From speaking to various people, Drulia learned that Needham is a hard working character player. "He will be put in a third line role and we will see how he does," Drulia explained. "You need your physical players. "I'm really happy with what we've accomplished with our team," he continued. "I'm really excited about our team and Brett will be a part of that." Needham tallied 11 goals, 20 assists and 125 penalty minutes in 55 games last season. During the playoffs, mostly playing with Dennis Kubat and Braden Olszewski, he collected three goals and six points in 12 games. "It's a pretty special time," Needham said. "Everyone is pumped for me." The Bombers acquired Needham from the OCN Blizzard, of the MJHL, for Carter Chomyn.
