The Portage Terriers defeated the Selkirk Steelers 7-2 on Tuesday to claim their first MJHL Championship since 1990. After trailing 2-1 in the Series, the Terriers won three in a row to eliminate the Steelers in six games. They will now wait for a winner between the Yorkton Terriers and Battlefords North Stars in the SJHL to determine their Anavet Cup opponent. Seven different Terriers contributed with goals in the win, making it a total team effort. Felice Turano and Christopher Benias scored first period goals for Portage, who led 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. Blair Hawes scored for the Steelers. The Terriers jumped ahead 5-2 after the second period on goals by Steve Haddon, Josh Boyd and Andrew Jackman. Matt Stengl replied for Selkirk. Kent Merriam and Mike Audino added the third period goals for Portage, who led 42-35 in the shots on goal department. Stan Gregorowich got the win, while Justin Harris suffered the loss. The Terriers scored four power play goals on 12 chances, while the Steelers scored one goal on eight advantages. Game one of the Anavet Cup will be played in Portage on Friday, April 22.
