Just shy of 100 music lovers showed up at the Poolside Jazz concert last Wednesday night. The Victoria Inn's pool room was home to the event, presented by the Flin Flon Arts Council. "We would have been happy with 30 people or so, but having 99 turn out, we're just so thrilled," says Arts Council representative Crystal Kolt. A $5 cover charge at the door covered any expenses and helped give the singers an honourarium. Six singers took the stage, ranging in age from 14 to 18. They were Heaven Young, Kendra Thompson, Jordan Hyndman, Justine Williamson, Katryn Kolt and Celine Leclair. Each sung four songs of their choice. As for the show itself, Kolt says "it was really exciting and unique." And she says, "this is one of those concerts people attend and will always remember." Two or three years ago, Jazz Nights were put on, which had a concert every two months. Kolt says the Poolside Jazz is similar to that idea. "It just gives up and coming singers an additional opportunity to perform," she says. And she adds, "this is very much a youth initiative" and "we have to support the next generation of signers." Organizer Mark Kolt says "it was a very rewarding event for everyone concerned." Giving the performers the chance to play with a band is just wonderful, he says. "They played wonderful music that doesn't get played nearly enough," says Mark. He adds that "Flin Flon has always had great musicians and singers." As for the audience, Mark says it was nice to see a variety of people. "...Young people and family members were there supporting their friends and family. I was just amazed," he says. As for the possibility of another show, Mark says, "I'm still trying to catch my breath (from this show)." There are hopes to continue this concert, which Crystal hopes to see again next year. "Everyone realizes what a unique opportunity this is," she says. By the looks on their faces, Crystal says "people were proud and pleased with the way things went." And what did she think? "It's really wonderful to see and experience this event," she says proudly.
