Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Better health, improved fitness, and stronger muscles and bones are just a few good reasons to stay physically active. Whether it's out on the field playing soccer, walking the dog, going for a bike ride, or taking a dip in the lake, staying active is a great way to improve your quality of life. Regular physical activity, as said by the Public Health Agency of Canada, can also increase self-esteem, put a control on weight loss, help you feel more energetic and relaxed, and increase your posture. May is Northern Physical Activity Month in Saskatchewan and the Province encourages both children and adults to be more physically active throughout the day. A more physically active lifestyle today can create a more independent lifestyle later in life. A less healthy lifestyle can lead to ailments like cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, cancer, obesity, depression and anxiety, and psychological problems. In 1996 a report from the U.S. Surgeon General detailed the medical benefits from physical activity. Today, there are many different ways to stay active and help reduce the risk of things like obesity and osteoporosis. Local opportunities In the Flin Flon, Creighton, and Denare Beach area residents have soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, beaches, tennis courts and basketball courts to use. In the summer months, residents are able to rent peddle boats in Denare Beach to see the land from a different perspective. Offering a great workout, the peddle boats are another way to get out on the water. During the winter months, the ski trails are open as are the open areas for snowshoeing. Keeping activities simpler, there are plenty of locations to ride a bike or go for a walk. Gardening is another great way to keep active in the summer months. For those looking for a little more excitement, why not pick up a skateboard or roller skates? The skatepark in Creighton is open. The Flin Flon Skatepark is expected to be open later this year _ with site work starting in June near Queen's Park. While at work or school, opt to take the stairs rather than the elevator. After school, put down the remote control and play a game outside. With the nice weather upon the Flin Flon area now, playing catch is a great way to get ready for the baseball season.
