Canoe races on Ross Lake Monday evening werenÕt about winning or losing, but about helping the recycling cause. In the past, teams had paired up against others in hopes of crossing the finish line with the best time. And although times were recorded and announced, it wasnÕt what was important. A donation of $100 was required from each team to participate. With 11 teams participating, $1,100 was raised for the Recycling Centre. Six races were held, as one team challenged the fastest team, with canoes maneuvering around buoys in the water. With the only rule, which was announced multiple times, being that no one was allowed to fall in the water, the crowd of approximately 200 watched and cheered on the teams. Cars and people were lined up surrounding the boardwalk as well as past MikeÕs Ice 'n' Burger Hut. As all were waiting for the festivities to get underway, hot dogs were served at the First Baptist Church. The boardwalk also played host to a Street Dance and the fireworks later that night. Though there was no dancing, though, as the Street Dance was a gathering place for people to do some more catching up before the light show got started.
