Team Iannone/ Davie will return for the annual Roller Goodwin Memorial Classic Hockey Tournament to be held in Flin Flon this August long weekend. Former pro and Junior Bomber Del Iannone is a veteran of the long running tournament and certainly was a visionary when it came to the future of the classic hockey weekend. The tournament was flagging in terms of team participation in the mid 1990s. It was increasingly difficult to lure teams to Calgary to participate every Easter weekend. Del, in an effort to bolster the B.C. team, recruited his son Patrick, who was about 15 at the time and a fine player, blazed the trail for younger family members to participate. From that point Del began to bring his family, and the result of Team Iannone/Davie. The success of the team, the family gatherings, and the general good vibe of the team was infectious, and shortly thereafter other family teams entered the tournament including the Crones and Davidsons. In short, it is one of the major reasons the tournament still continues. Contacted at his home in Trail, BC, Del had the following comments. "Once again the Iannone/Davie team is getting ready for another Roller Goodwin Hockey Tournament. "We are especially happy and excited about coming back to Flin Flon where we've all had such great memories of friends and growing up throughout the years. "Our team once again will consist of sons, daughters, uncles and grandkids of Sandy and Pinkie Davie and Nick Iannone. Our crew should be in the neighbourhood of about 40 in total. "We are inviting all the great people of Flin Flon whom we have so many fond memories of to please come out and watch the games and have a couple of beers with the crew. "Once again my Uncle Rudy, now in his mid 70s, is ready to go. I already told him he will be taking the opening face off in our opening game against a certain NHL general manager, and he became quite excited and phoned me back two weeks later and said he started to ride the bike and had already gone through two cases of A535. "Our team over the years has gotten a little older and a lot heavier. I have wanted to give a training schedule to all the boys and girls to work out and work up a good sweat every day until the tournament starts. "The only problem we are having is that Nick, Sandy, and Pinkie always told us if you sweat a lot you should always drink a lot too. So far we have all put on about 10 pounds in two weeks, and if we keep up the training we should all be about 50 pounds overweight when we arrive. We feel that the way we can skate and move the puck we have no chance of winning any games, but we will assure you all that we will be the last to leave any parties. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the August long weekend."
