The 25th Flin Flon Open Darts Championships are being held this weekend at the Royal Canadian Legion. The event has for the first time been recognized by the Canadian National Darts Federation as a nationally ranked tournament. Participating players will be able to earn valuable ranking points in both singles events. Many of Canada's top players will be making the trip north with last years national men's single champion Gerry Convery and 2003 national champion Rory Orvis competing. Manitoba's 2006 men's champion, Shane Perry, and ladies champion, Karen Goodbranson, have both indicated they will be here. Flin Flon has had a very active darts contingent over the last 25 years and has produced some excellent competitors. Tanya Nash represented Canada in South Africa as a junior. Luke Jackson won the junior men's provincial title, Dennis Nowroski defeated former national champion Arnold Parke on the stage of the Flin Flon community hall to take his Manitoba men's singles title. Perry Burton has twice won the Manitoba and North West Ontario Command singles title. The list of local players who have also represented the province or Legion Provincial Command is very impressive and includes Kevin Nash, Keith Loggie, Bob Reihl, Jack Rigby, Jake Davis, Harold Harris, Sonny Audet, Shannon Reimer, Laurance Balfour, Brian Humphreys, Al King, and Randy McConnell, The local dart club has had terrific support over the years from the Royal Canadian Legion and the Elks. It has also enjoyed the much needed support of a great many local business who continue to contribute to its success. The club also continues its support of the Children's Wish Foundation and the Flin Flon food bank. Darts is a game that can be enjoyed by all ages, male and female and is one of the few sports that can be practiced at home. The general public is cordially invited to drop into the upstairs of the legion during the weekend events to enjoy what promises to be another great tournament.
