Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Flin Flon Bombers showed the Nipawin Hawks how to win a playoff hockey game. The Bombers earned a big 7-1 win over the Hawks last Thursday, March 14, in Game 5 of the North Semifinal series. That gave Flin Flon a 3-2 series lead and a chance to advance by winning Saturday's game, played after The Reminder went to press. On Thursday, the Hawks scored their lone goal at 11:11 in the first period. Flin Flon opened fire in the second period with six markers in 15 minutes. Brett Boehm was first on target, at :49, with help from Andy Blanke and Dylan Balaski. Josh Roach followed suit just three minutes later with help from Boehm and Jason Wark. Konrad Litke gave his shot a go as he made it a 3-1 hockey game with help from Brody Robinson and Dillan McCombie at 5:29. The Maroon and White kept on the Hawks as Boehm picked up his second of the night at 9:48. McCombie was next in line as he scored the team's first power play goal of the night at 11:30 with help from Brett Penner and Tanner Clark. Keeping in the small increments of time, Wark scored his lone goal of the night as he made it a 6-1 game with help from Blanke and Boehm at 15:04. Heading into the third period, the Bombers were definitely on top. A final goal from Robinson, on a power play, at 19:45 in the third, sealed the deal for the Bombers. See 'Shots...' on pg. 7 Continued from pg. 4 Game 5 was theirs. The Bombers nearly doubled the Hawks shots on net. All in all, the Bombers fired off 43 shots, while the Hawks sent 25 to Devin Buffalo. It was evident the game was in the Bombers' favour as they managed 13 shots in the first, 21 in the second, and nine in the third period. Nipawin's eight, seven, and 10 shots weren't enough to compete with Flin Flon. Game 6 The Bombers and Hawks were back at the Whitney Forum Saturday night for Game 6 of the North Semifinals. If the Bombers defeated the Hawks Saturday, they advance to the North Finals and take on the winner of the Humboldt-Melfort series. If the Hawks won, the teams will travel to Nipawin for Game 7 tomorrow night. Nipawin has proved to be the place to play for the Bombers as they picked up a 5-4 win in Game 1 as well as a 7-1 victory in Game 5. Semifinals The Humboldt Broncos led the Bauer Conference into the playoffs in top spot after the regular season. The Broncos rested for about a week while the Melfort Mustangs and Battlefords North Stars fought for fourth place. The Broncos lead the Mustangs 3-1-1 heading into the weekend. In the Sherwood Conference, the Yorkton Terriers lead the Estevan Bruins 3-1 heading into the weekend while the Melville Millionaires and Notre Dame Hounds were tied 2-1-1. Rankings Because of the Survivor Series, the Melfort Mustangs and Estevan Bruins hold three and four games over the rest of the teams and sit at the top of the standings. The Bauer Mustangs and the Sherwood Bruins were tied with eight points heading into the weekend action. Next in line were the Humboldt Broncos, Flin Flon Bombers, and Yorkton Terriers with six points. The Nipawin Hawks, Melville Millionaire and Notre Dame Hounds all brought up the end of the train with four points as of Friday morning.
