The Flin Flon Bombers took one step forward and another one back over the weekend. The Bombers clawed back the Yorkton Terriers 5-4 in overtime Friday before going bankrupt against the Melville Millionaires 7-3 the next night. In the first game, the Maroon and White spent most of the first period down by one until Dennis Kubat potted his team-leading 22nd goal on the powerplay. That helped kickstart an offensive outburst that saw Blake Rolston light the lamp twice Ð including once shorthanded Ð before the halfway point of the second. Pierre-Luc Boucher slipped one more past Yorkton netminder Lynden Sammartino to close out the period. The third period was a different story as the Terriers outshot their opponents 16-2 en route to an impressive comeback. Chad Nehring's third goal of the night came with just 16 seconds left to take this one to an extra frame. Having just blown a 4-1 lead, the Bombers weren't about to let this one slip away. Boucher's second goal of the game at 2:39 of OT finally gave Flin Flon the W. Mike Nichol was busy in the visitor's net, stopping 40 of 44 shots. His teammates fired 30 pucks at Sammartino. Picking up assists for the Bombers were Nichol, Mackenzie Groenewegen, Reid MacLeod, Kyle Lundale, Robert Beaudry, Dustyn Clegg, Kubat, and Boucher. As has been the case so often this season, the Bombers could not duplicate their success the following night. In Melville, Groenewegen opened the scoring on a feed from Shawn McNulty, but the home side's Deder Klassen soon answered back. MacLeod made the score 2-1 early in the second before a pair of quick Melville markers from Daniel Moriarty and Scott Hennings put the visitors down by one. After McNulty tied things up a few minutes later, another rapid two-goal eruption by the Millionaires Ð including one assisted by former Bomber Richard Dupre, the game's first star Ð sealed the deal. The moneymen would slip two more past Nichol in the final period. Also picking up assists for the Bombers were Nick Collition, Lundale, and Beaudry. The Bombers again had trouble keeping the puck out of their end, giving up 47 shots while managing 40 of their own. For both games combined, Flin Flon went 2-33 on the powerplay Ð an area that must improve if the Bombers are to earn a berth in the postseason. Heading into last night's home stand against the Humboldt Broncos, the Bombers had won just three of eight games this month. They were firmly entrenched in the SJHL basement with 31 points in 41 games, and had the second-fewest goals for, 120, while giving up the most, 176. Results from last night's match-up, the Bombers' last of 2006, were unavailable at press time.
