Kelly Carrington Staff Writer In honour of Flin Flon's 80th birthday, the City will be hosting a family fun day this Sunday, Feb. 17. 'This is a fun winter event that is kicking off Flin Flon's 80th birthday,' said volunteer Brenda Russell. Flin Flon will turn 80 this summer, during the Trout Festival. The Fire and Ice Family Fun Day will take place on Sunday during the Louis Riel Day long weekend. 'We just want to provide an event for people and families to participate in on that weekend,' said Russell. A rink will be cleared on Ross Lake for those interested in skating or playing some hockey. The Flin Flon Bombers have confirmed that they will be skating there as part of the celebration. 'And the Kinsmen are going to do a contest for everyone to participate (in) on the ice,' said Russell, who was excited to announce it would involve hockey sticks and pucks. 2013 will be the first year for the Fire and Ice Family Fun Day, but it could carry on for years to come. 'It's an opportunity for people and families together (to) skate or just spectate,' Russell said. 'The event is on a trial basis to see how it's going to go. We will evaluate and decide if it will take place on an annual basis.' Along with the skating, the day will include a bonfire for all those attending. Participants are invited to bring their own skates. For those who do not have skates, the City of Flin Flon has collected 30 pairs that will be lent out throughout the day. 'Those who haven't had the opportunity to skate, skates will be available to take a spin around the lake,' said Russell. There will be no admission at the Fire and Ice Family Fun Day, which will run from 1-8 p.m.
