Dust off those bike seats and get those runners off the shelf - the 12th annual Triathlon and Duathlon will be hitting the streets and the pool on Sunday, July 29. Recreation programmer Heather Todoschuk says she is excited to see who will be at this year's event. "We don't have many people registered yet," she notes, but adds that "there are a couple people we know are going to join for sure." Todoschuk says this event hasn't always brought the largest crowd, but she is hoping for a better turnout this year. She says they are hoping at least 20 people will sign up. "All the events are open to both male and female, but the athlete must be at least 12 years old," states Todoschuk. Anyone wishing to register for the triathlon or duathlon can sign up individually or as part of a team. Each person participating must pay a registration fee of $25, which includes a t-shirt and the medals. The deadline for registering for the 12th annual race is Wednesday, July 25. There are four races the athletes have to choose from, explains Todoschuk. For the athletes looking for a bit of everything, but a shorter distance, there is the "try a tri", which includes a 400m swim, 15 km cycle and a 3 km run. And for a longer distance, there is the "sprint," which is a 750 m swim, a 20 km cycle and a 5 km run. "For a longer track there is the 'Olympic' course," adds Todoschuk. Athletes will swim for 1500 m, cycle for 40 km and then run for 10 km. And for those looking to keep their feet on dry land, there is the duathlon. Participants run for 5 km then cycle for 20 km and then run another 5 km. All swimming will take place at the Aqua Centre while the running and cycling will take place throughout the town depending on what category participants are in, says Todoschuk. Athletes are required to supply their bikes and must wear helmets. Those taking part in the event are asked to be at the Aqua Centre on Sunday, July 29, at 7:30 a.m. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m.
