Spring is in the air and itÕs the perfect time to dust off the golf clubs and get ready for the season. As the North would have it, snow has delayed the opening of the golf season. But for all those who just canÕt wait to hit the links, CurtÕs Customs Clubs and Curling has opened up for business at the Creighton Sportex. Open in the former Curling Rink lounge, owner Curt Lawrence says his shop is the way to hit the greens 365 days a year. The pro shop offers not only indoor lessons, but also the Vector Launch System. ÒIt basically analyzes the swing and will give all the details about the golf swing,Ó says the owner. Lawrence says the launch system is a great thing to have, but he is particularity excited about the virtual golf simulator, which will be arriving in the fall. ÒIt enables, for the first time in Flin Flon history, for golfers to golf 12 months a year,Ó he says. Although it sounds similar to the launch system, Lawrence says there are some big differences. ÒThe system is a swing analyzer, which gives indoor lessons, but in the simulator you can play on a number of courses, but (while) playing indoors,Ó he says. With all the new toys aside, Lawrence also provides the basics of golf fashions for men, women and juniors, Ping and Bang equipment, shoes, gloves and of course, clubs. CurtÕs Custom clubs and Curling opened for business for March, but it isnÕt the first time for the business. ÒIÕve been in this business and IÕve had my own off course pro shop since 1995, so itÕs not new to me at all, just a new location,Ó says the pro. With just over a month under his belt in the new spot, Lawrence says things have been going really well. ÒItÕs been really great. IÕve given lots of indoor lessons and there are two ladies clinics already full with a waiting list for a third,Ó he says. A plus for the golfer is to have a wide variety of people to share the game with. ÒIÕve given several junior lessons,Ó he says, adding that he has seen a wide age range for ladies and men as well. ÒIt broadens customer base and generally speaking, for the community, IÕm promoting golf to basically all ages. ItÕs terrific for all ages,Ó he says. And with all those golfers stopping in, Lawrence says aside from their age range, they also come with a range of golf education. ÒThey are naturally inquisitive people,Ó he says of golfers. ÒThey are very educated people today with the Internet and that makes my job a lot easier.Ó With less questions in the air from the customers, Lawrence says heÕs more Òthere to reassure them and help them to understand things a bit more.Ó While out on the greens many golfers like to enjoy a drink while hoping to hit the pin. Lawrence says itÕs the same inside his business now that he is licenced. ÒWith the golf simulator, they go hand in hand. You can have a foursome of fellas come in and play a round of golf and have a round of beer,Ó he says. The simulator will be a permanent part of the pro shop once it arrives. The other part of LawrenceÕs venture is selling curling supplies, which he says should start in August. And with a wide array of equipment, Lawrence will be able to offer shoes, brooms, clothing, hats and accessories.
