It wasn't exactly the Indy 500, but last week's Flin Flon Kub Kar Derby did offer some wind-slicing suspense. Cub scouts raced their homemade wooden cars down a track at the Scout Hall to see who had the biggest need for speed. But it wasn't so much about the spirit of competition as it was sportsmanship, said Cub leader Ron Potkonjak. Potkonjak noted each child started with a simple block of wood and had to use their creativity to carve and paint it into a wheeled speedster. The cars were placed atop a sloped wooden track and released, racing headlong into a couch cushion some 30 feet away. Jack Rigby, Legion representative to the Cubs, helped with the judging, not always an easy task considering the closeness of many match-ups. In the end, Nolan Parsons captured first place, followed by Vincent Parsons in second place and Kyle Puchailo in third. At the same time, the 5th Beaver Colony, for younger children, held their Beaver Buggy race. Both entrants were honoured just for participating: Skanthan Vijayaranjan and Ethan Vankoughnett. Later this year, the groups will be busy planting trees as part of a national replenishing effort involving Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers.
