Jonathon Naylor Editor It wasn't exactly the Indy 500, but last week's Flin Flon Kub Kar Derby did offer some wind-slicing suspense. Cubs raced their homemade wooden cars down a track at the Scout Hall to see who had the biggest need for speed. But as is always the case with this annual event, it wasn't so much about the spirit of competition as it was sportsmanship. Each child started with a simple block of wood and had to use their creativity to carve and paint it into a wheeled speedster. Two by two, the cars were placed atop a sloped wooden track and released, racing headlong toward the finish line some 30 feet away. Jack Rigby, Legion representative to the Cubs, helped with the judging, not always an easy task considering the closeness of many match-ups. First place In the end, Brayden Nilghe captured first place, followed by Austin Harrower in second. Five Cubs took part. That same evening, last Monday, the 5th Beaver Colony, for younger children, held their Beaver Buggy race. Five entrants were honoured just for participating: Harley Sherman, Jarek Osika, Rogan Bacon, Jordan Gorrell and Asher McKay. Whereas the Cubs made their cars at the Ecole McIsaac School wood shop, the Beavers only painted their vehicles.
