The Northstars closed the door on another season over the weekend as they handed out the year end trophies to the deserving players. Mel Englestad was the guest speaker and entertained the crowd with his fond memories of becoming a junior player and then a pro player. He became quite emotional when speaking about how hockey had contributed in a positive way to his life. Before the awards, President Rob Murray spoke first giving his thanks to the board, fans and players. The mayor of Thompson then expressed his thanks to the team and board. He commented that at every home opener over the last nine years, he had been promising a new rink for the following season. This year it looks like that may be true. The C.A. Nesbitt Arena is being gutted. Future Northstars will have a brand new facility to play in next fall. Coach Korman then took the podium and talked of the changes in players heÕs seen over the last 18 years. The awards then followed with the following recipients: Best Defensemen-Brent Wilson and Tanner Korchinski Most Valuable Player - Dougie Mcleod Most Improved - Calvin Cairns, Matt Stevens Most Dedicated - Wade Beardy Hardest Worker Dougie Mcleod (third time recipient) and Jon Mowatt Rookie of the Year-Ryan Delorme Top Scorer - Brent Wilson (4th in the league, top defensemen in the league) Top Goal Scorer-Kyle Stephansson Most Popular - Cory Dupre Player of the Game- Brent Wilson Crunch of the Game - Tanner Korchinski Scholastic Award- Tanner Korchinski 100+ games as a Northstar - Dougie Mcleod and Tanner Korchinski It was a successful season for the Northstars, finishing at 19-18-1-3. First year goalie, Ryan Delorme, established a record with the lowest goals against average in Northstar history. The new arena should make for an exciting home opener in the fall. The Northstars will host a week long conditioning camp mid August with tryouts to follow soon after. Go Northstars!!
