The NorMan Northstars dropped two important games this past weekend against division rivals, Eastman Selects. Each game was a four point game and the Northstars only came out with a single. Saturday's game was certainly exciting as the Eastman Selects came out with all barrels firing, dominating the Northstars with a 4-1 lead after the first eight minutes of play. The Northstars battled back hard during the remaining two periods. After regulation and a five minute overtime, the two teams were left at a 6-6 tie. Shoot out time! The Northstars have been involved in four shootouts so far this season, coming out with only one win. After 10 shooters, the Eastman Selects stole the victory, beating a solid Ryan Delorme. It was a great night for Winnipeg forward Kyle Stephansson as he scored a hat trick and had a helper as well. The defensemen for the Northstars accounted for the remaining three goals, as Brent Wilson, of Norway House, found the back of the net twice while Tanner Korchinski scored from the point and set up another. Sundays game was a tighter checking game with less scoring opportunities. At the one minute mark of the third period it looked like the two teams were headed into a second overtime series. A defensive breakdown in our own end gave the Selects the go ahead goal and the win. The weekend games were important if the Northstars were going to make a surge for third spot. It is unlikely now that they will move Eastman into fourth. The Northstars will have to pick up the wins January 11 and 12 to stay ahead of fifth place team, Interlake Lightening, to keep a playoff series at home. This weekend marked the return of injured player, Kajun Mckay and he did not disappoint. Mckay, brother of Conrad Mckay former OCN Blizzard, had a hand in three goals during Saturday nights battle. The highly regarded goal scorer is sure to be an asset for the northern club. The NorMan Northstars are hosting the Manitoba AAA Midget All-star game on February 2 at the GB Arena in Thompson. Representing the Team East from the Northstars is Korchinski, Wilson, Dougie Mcleod and Stephansson.
