Female hockey players in the Norman Region will put their skills to the test this weekend at the Whitney Forum. The girls will work towards a spot on the Northern Wild team as the competitive tryouts get going tomorrow. The Wild compete in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League and showcase the best of the best in the North. Andrew Murphy, of The Pas, will be head bench boss of the Wild this year as Colleen Cairns of Snow Lake will be his assistant. Flin Flonner Sandra Yaworski will be the team's manager and director. Meriena Dowhy, of The Pas, will also act as manager. In their regular season, the Northern Wild will compete hard in 30 games against seven other teams. According to the Thompson Citizen, the Wild intend to compete in up to four tournaments with the goal of playing 50 games in total this season _ or more. This weekend's tryouts are open to female hockey players born between 1996 and 2000. Those born in 1999 and 2000 will be considered full-time players, but the Citizen notes they will be listed as affiliated players. '...which means they will be eligible to play for female bantam teams as well,' an article read. The Northern Wild hope to compete in exhibition games September 7-8 with practices being held in Thompson to prepare for the showcase tournament later next month. The Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League will begin regular season play on October 1.
