Dance classes are staying alive in Flin Flon thanks parent support. A dilemma hit the Northern Dance Academy when Greyhound changed their bus schedule in the summer which didn't allow instructor Kelly Waterman to travel to Flin Flon from Thompson. To ensure the dancers were able to dance at the level they have been, the Northern Dance Academy made arrangements with a dance instructor from Manitou who has been contracted to come to Flin Flon for four weekends. "Parents are very committed and we hope we can make this work," says Eloise Gawiak, as the academy was able to pay for this with money that parents fundraised. "The dancers will be taught in the same discipline they are used to," says parent Eloise Gawiak. "They will dance in each style twice on each weekend." Gawiak said previous dancers are being accomodated with new dances, which is also hoped to attract new people. "One program we are considering is Terrific Two, which is a parent and child (two and three-years-old) interactive class. Dance Exploration for three and four-year-olds establish a basic foundation of dance movements using music. Props might also be offered with interest," she says. The academy also wants to offer ballroom dance sessions, teach adults Foxtrot, the Waltz, Swing Tango and Latin Dance. Classes begin the weekend of Oct. 14 to 16 and resume on Nov.4 to 6, 18 to 20 and Dec. 9 to 11. Gawiak noted that if the weekends go well, the Academy will try and push dance into 2006. "All the girls are really happy," Gawiak says, despite the fact the academy lost 10 dancers. Gawiak said that if anyone is interested in joining, they can call Robert Bratvold at 688-3328.
