The elected leaders of the two communities with teams in the SJHL finals have made a friendly wager over the series.
Mayor George Fontaine confirmed during the April 11 city council meeting that he and North Battleford Mayor David Gillan had agreed to a deal over the upcoming SJHL final, to be played between the Battlefords North Stars and the Flin Flon Bombers.
Fontaine said during the meeting that deal was simple - the mayor whose team loses the series would have to wear the opponent's jersey during an upcoming council meeting.
"The wager is who wears who's jersey in a public place after the other team loses," said Fontaine, who then quipped, "I just need to find out what his size is," before a laugh and applause from the public gallery.
"I recommend that everybody follows along with the series over the next couple of weeks. These young men have battled hard - good luck to the Flin Flon Bombers," said councillor Mike Slipp during the meeting.
Mayor Gillan also talked his share of trash as part of the deal, ahead of the series starting this weekend.
“It’s always exciting when your community hosts a championship event and certainly the SJHL finals between the North Stars and the Bombers will be very entertaining,” Gillan is quoted as saying in a press release issued by the City of Flin Flon April 13.
“We’re delighted to help promote the road to the Canterra Seeds Cup and have a little bit of healthy competiton with the City of Flin Flon. As a hockey fan, this year’s season has been a very electric one to watch and I definitely look forward to seeing Mayor Fontaine donning a North Stars jersey at an upcoming council meeting."
The series starts with Games 1 and 2 at North Battleford's Access Communication Centre April 14 and 15, before coming back to Flin Flon's Whitney Forum April 21 and 22 for Games 3 and 4. If needed, Game 5 will be in the Battlefords April 25, with the series swinging back to Flin Flon for a hypothetical Game 6 April 29. A decisive seventh game, if needed, will be played in North Battleford May 3.
