It was a successful weekend for the Norman Northstars in Thompson this past weekend. The Central Plains Capitals visited the GB Arena and were treated to a hospitable northern welcome. Saturday's game saw all three local players hit the game sheet. Jordan Crone scored the second goal of the 5-1 victory, while Tanner Korchinski had three helpers and Corey Dupre had one assist. The game on Sunday proved to be and exciting game for the 400 fans in the arena. The Capitals turned it on and led after the first period 2-0. Crone sniped the goalie to get the Northstars on the board in the second period. A defensive breakdown aloud the Capitals to capitalize, potting another to regain a two goal lead at 3-1. Brent Wilson of Norway House found the corner later in the third to bring the Northstars within one. Assistant Captain Crone had the hot stick and found the back of the net to tie it up late in the game. Nothing was decided in the overtime period. A three man shoot out, new to the league this season, would decide the fate of these two teams. Crone was slated first to shoot and slipped one past the Capitals tender. Korchinski and Wilson were the other shooters, but could not find the back of the net. The Capitals tied up the shoot out with their last player. After the scheduled three shooters, a one and one scenario took place. The Capitals shot first and were denied by the Northstars rookie goalie, Ryan Deloram. The 15-year-old from Rankin Inlet was then chosen to shoot for the Northstars. With great hands Kalujak faked out the goalie to end the game in favour of the Northstars. The obvious game star recipient for this game was Crone. Along with the two wins, the boys also wrapped their sticks with pink tape to show support for the fight against breast cancer. They also raffled off a loonie stick and donated the square revenue to support this cause. The Northstars have not lost a game in regulation since October 12. The current record for the team is 4-5-0-2. They travel to Winnipeg this weekend and will have their first look at the Thrashers. The Winnipeg Wild and Eastman Selects are also on the schedule. The Northstars face the Kenora Thistles at home November 9 and 10. Go Northstars!
