The 2004 Norman Summer Games regional finals were held in Flin Flon and The Pas over the weekend. Approximately 200 athletes from the region participated, and over half of those will advance to the MTS Manitoba Summer Games in Dauphin, to be held August 11-15. Although the number of participants is down from previous Games, many of the other regions saw significant decreases as well, and registration in the Norman region was not far from the rest of the province. Only one event had to be held in Flin Flon, as the other six were canceled due to low numbers. In golf, 15 participants hit the links at Phantom Lake vying for a spot on the Norman Region Golf Team. Taking the gold medal in the Junior Males 10-12 category was Flin Flon's Trevor Fox with a score of 210. In Junior Males 13-14, Flin Flon's Scott Skeavington won the gold medal on a playoff hole, while Brett Janz of The Pas picked up the silver. Both golfers had a score of 194 heading into the playoff. The bronze medal went to Neal Leifso of Flin Flon with a score of 216. In the Junior Males 15-16 category, Jordan Hanratty of The Pas took the gold with a score of 178. Flin Flon's Eric Skeavington won the silver with a score of 192, and Flin Flon's Doug Asmus was the bronze medalist with a score of 204. Gillam's Matt Phin took gold in the Junior Males 17-18 category with a score of 170, while Stacey Anderson will be the only female entrant on the team. She took gold in the Junior Females 17-18 category with a score of 194. All golfers played 18 holes, with their scores then calculated to 36 holes. Other Flin Flon athletes advancing to Dauphin are Grant Willey in table tennis and Landon Rowe for cycling. The Flin Flon Selects squirt girls softball team will also be going to Dauphin. They are Katie Chatfield, Becky Davis, Athea Fernandes, Jaimie Fleuty, Rebecca Gregory, Erin Harper, Jennifer Kritzer, Katherine Lane, Kayla Nelson, Holly Rainville, Madison Rowe, Kayla Wallaker, Emma Wilson, Tim Babcock (coach), Denise Davis (coach) and Hollee Hughes (manager). Results from archery, athletics, soccer and triathlon, all run in The Pas, were not available at press time. We will have a recap from the Norman Games in The Reminder later this week.7/6/04
