The Flin Flon Bombers had a split weekend with a loss to the Humboldt Broncos followed by a win over the Battlefords North Stars. Their split effort wasn't enough for player recognition this week, as no Bombers were selected to receive the SJHL's Player of the Week honours. The winners were Dylan Smith, of the Estevan Bruins, Alex Wakaluk, of the Melville Millionaires, Ian Williams, of the Notre Dame Hounds, and Grant Jensen, of the Nipawin Hawks. Player of the Week Dylan Smith, Estevan Bruins 1992 F Dylan Smith (Big River SK) wins the award for the second time since returning to the SJHL on January 10th. Smith started the week with a goal and an assist on Tuesday night during a win over Notre Dame. He ended the week with four goals and one assist in Saturday's victory over Melfort. He now has nine goals and seven assists in just nine games overall and he figures to be a prominent player for the Bruins as they enter the playoffs as underdogs, but with spoiler potential. Defenseman of the Week Grant Jensen, Nipawin Hawks 1992 D Grant Jensen (Radville SK) isn't known for his offensive production; but he did contribute one goal and one assist in three games played last week and he continues to play solid defense in front of his netminders. Jensen had a goal in a victory over Kindersley on Friday night and then set up one on Saturday in La Ronge, also a win for the Hawks. For the season, Jensen now has three goals and five assists in 43 games played. Rookie of the Week Ian Williams, Notre Dame Hounds 1995 F Ian Williams (Wilcox SK) has carved out a prominent role this season on a Hounds team that is fairly laden with veterans. Still midget eligible, Williams picked up a goal and two assists in two games played last week. He scored once in Tuesday's loss to Estevan and then set up both of his team's goals on Saturday in Yorkton. On the season, he is sixth on the team in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists in 42 games. Goaltender of the Week Alex Wakaluk, Melville Millionaires 1993 G Alex Wakaluk (Bellevue AB) backstopped his team to a pair of wins on the road last week, allowing just one goal in Kindersley on Thursday and also just one the very next night in North Battleford. Overall, he turned away 59-of-61 shots (.966). The busiest goaltender in the SJHL this season, Wakaluk is now 23-15-and-2 with a 2.22-GAA and a .932-SPCT. He ranks first in minutes played, tied for first in wins, and second in shutouts with five this season. He was also, recently, named SJHL Goaltender Of The Month for January.
