Nike Canada Ltd. is asking Canadians to join them in congratulating Canada's National Junior team on its outstanding performance at the 2004 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Helsinki, Finland. "As a proud sponsor, Nike would like to salute our young hockey heroes for 'Lighting It Up' in Helsinki," said Derek Kent, Head of Corporate Communications, Nike Canada. "Team Canada played the type of fast paced and offensive-focused hockey that young players watching at home could really get excited about and that ultimately led to their success throughout the tournament." Canada's National Junior team had won each of its first five games before falling 4-3 to the United States in the Gold medal game. Despite the loss, Canada led the tournament in team scoring with 35 goals - eight more than any other team - and an impressive goals-per-game average of 5.8. Toronto's Anthony Stewart, who registered a goal and two assists against the United States, and teammate Nigel Dawes of Winnipeg finished tied for the tournament lead in individual scoring with 11 points each in six games. "We couldn't be more proud of the team for its dedication to excellence, creative style of play and for inspiring future generations of National Junior teams to keep 'Lighting It Up'," said Kent. Nike Canada, and members of the Nike Hockey Tour Team, were on-hand to welcome and salute Team Canada as they arrived home at Pearson International Airport in Toronto. As part of its "Light It Up" campaign to inspire young Canadians who love hockey, Nike Canada recently launched the Breakaway Challenge - a national initiative aimed at getting players across the country to showcase their best breakaway skills. Each breakaway move will be digitally recorded and posted at www.nikehockey.ca as part of the national competition to find Canada's best and most creative breakaway moves, which will be voted on by the players and by nikehockey.ca members. Bauer NIKE Hockey is an official sponsor of Canada's National Junior team. Nike Canada Ltd. was established in 1984 and is based in Thornhill, Ont.
