The NHL players and owners met yesterday for the first time since September 9. At the request of the NHLPA, owners met with the players in Toronto to discuss a new agreement. The proposal put forth by the players was well received by the owners despite the fact that it did not include a salary cap. Cautious optimism is the term being used to describe the meeting. According to reports, the new proposal includes a stricter luxury tax system, one that severely penalizes teams with a salary over $40 million. It also included a one-time salary rollback and lower entry level salaries with more restrictions. The new offer is said to contain enough cuts to save the owners $200 million next season. The NHLPA presented the new proposal for four hours before breaking. Talks were scheduled to continue today, but have been put back until Tuesday, giving way to speculation that the owners want to revue the proposal and bring a counter offer to the table next week. Today is the 85th day of the lockout and nearly 400 games have been canceled. including the All-Star Game in Atlanta.
