Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Eight teams from the East and eight teams from the West are competing in the NHL playoffs for the sought-after Stanley Cup. Games started Wednesday night in the Western Conference with the Los Angeles Kings (8th) taking on the Vancouver Canucks (1st). The Detroit Red Wings (5th) started their series with the Nashville Predators (4th) the same night. Also starting up Wednesday were the Philadelphia Flyers (5th) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (4th) of the Eastern Conference. Last night, the Western Conference saw the San Jose Sharks (7th) match up against the St. Louis Blues (2nd) and the Chicago Blackhawks (6th) take on the Phoenix Coyotes (3rd). In the Eastern Conference, the Ottawa Senators (8th) were up against the New York Rangers (1st) while the Washington Capitals (7th) took on the Boston Bruins (2nd). Tonight, the New Jersey Devils (6th) start their series with the Florida Panthers (3rd). Ottawa and Vancouver are the only Canadian teams in the playoffs this spring, with Montreal, Edmonton, Toronto, Calgary and Winnipeg on the outside looking in. Last year, the Stanley Cup final came down to the Bruins and the Canucks _ with the Cup heading to Boston.
