Mel (The Mangler) Angelstad, a former Flin Flon Bomber, has signed with the Newcastle Vipers of Britain's elite league. The 32-year-old hockey enforcer, from Saskatoon, played last season for the Belfast Giants, scoring four goals and piling up 293 penalty minutes in 57 games. "Mel is respected as one of the toughest guys in pro hockey and I know what he will bring to the Newcastle Vipers," player-coach Rob Wilson, who makes his home in Toronto, told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Angelstad racked up a career-high 463 minutes when he played in his teens for the Flin Flon Bombers. He spent much of his career in the old Colonial league, the IHL and the AHL. In 67 games with the Manitoba Moose in 2000-2001, he scored one goal and spent 232 minutes in penalty boxes. He played two games in the NHL with the Washington Capitals in 2003-2004. Club chairman Paddy O'Connor has high expectations. "I personally know what he will bring to the team having watched him for a number of years," O'Connor told the Evening Chronicle. "Everyone connected with the club is looking forward to the arrival of Mel Angelstad."
