The province of Saskatchewan announced more than $2 million for the development of a new, 68 full-service site campground at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park, on Friday.
Part of the government’s goal of a vibrant and refreshed provincial parks system, this project is scheduled to begin immediately. The new campground is projected to open in summer 2015.
“Saskatchewan’s provincial parks are seeing record attendance numbers, and we are responding to this growing demand with capital investments like the development of this new campground,” Premier Brad Wall said.
“This new campground will allow more visitors to get out to our great
parks and experience some of the recreational opportunities available in Saskatchewan.”
Greenwater Lake Provincial Park currently offers 185 visitor campsites.
Public consultations in recent years have identified a need for more campsites to accommodate the increased attendance to this park.
The addition of 68 new, full-service campsites will increase camping capacity by more than 35 per cent.
The project will involve developing 68 new full service campsites with individual water, sewer, and electrical services.
Site work also includes water and electrical distribution, a wastewater collection system, new access and campground roads, four washroom buildings and trails.
Currently, work is underway to deliver a new Hilltop Campground
service centre which is scheduled for completion in time for the 2015
summer camping season.
Other recent projects at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park include electrical expansion in Cranberry and Aspen Grove campgrounds, completed in spring 2014.
In 2013, the provincial park system set a record 3.7 million visits. Greenwater Lake Provincial Park had an attendance level of 178,996.
The 2014-15 budget has increased funding to provincial parks by 4.6 per cent this year.
This includes capital and maintenance spending which will hit record levels with $14.9 million identified for upgrades and new construction projects.
Total capital investments in provincial parks have increased 244 per cent in the past seven years, compared to the previous seven year period.
Greenwater Lake Provincial Park is not too far from the area’s Bakers Narrows and offers a one-day drive for families looking for a new campground to explore.
The Park is located roughly 500 kilometers from Creighton.
