New camping shelters called yurts are now available at the New Nutimik provincial campground as part of the province's Camping Lite program, Conservation Minister Stan Struthers announced, before leaving for the park to be first to use a yurt. "Hecla and Camp Morton campgrounds already offer fully furnished and ready-to-enjoy cabins, and yurts are one more alternative to traditional camping in Manitoba's provincial parks," said Struthers. Yurts are fabric-sided domed shelters for people who like to camp but don't own or want to bring their own tent with them. The first 10 yurts will be available at New Nutimik campground in Whiteshell Provincial Park in the north end of the park off PTH 307. Each yurt has windows and a skylight that opens, lockable doors, a heater and lighting. The yurts also feature rustic log furniture including a bunk bed, futon, table, chairs and a small storage cabinet. Each yurt is five metres (16 feet) in diameter, is designated non-smoking and accommodates four adults or a family of five. Yurts or yurta, which is actually the Russian word for these dwellings, are available for a nightly fee of $30 plus taxes. The minister also noted that Canada's Parks Day is Saturday, July 16. Manitobans and visitors are invited to explore and enjoy the many parks in the province. Normal entry fees for Manitoba provincial parks will be waived on July 15, 16 and 17. Campground and other fees remain in place. "We encourage everyone to take advantage of the free entry for a great Manitoba outdoor experience," said Struthers. "With over a million hectares of road-accessible provincial parklands in Manitoba, we have a wide variety of activities for a Manitoba-based vacation." A wide variety of activities will be offered at provincial parks in Manitoba on Canada's Parks Day weekend.
