He may not have the same ties to Flin Flon as the current coaching staff, but Trevor Sack knows he has what it takes to be the Flin Flon Bombers' assistant coach. With six years of experience under his belt, Sack comes highly recommended from Regina, where he was a head coach for a Midget team. Though this will be SackÕs first assistant coaching job in the SJHL, he has been on the other side of the boards a number of times as he scouted in the league. ÒI followed the SJHL closely for scouting,Ó said Sack. ÒI kept track on a number of players and I was pretty keen on the teams in the league. ÒThe Bombers always have competitive hockey clubs. They are competitive every night.Ó As Sack has spent many games scouting players, he will spend this season next to head coach and GM Mike Reagan on the bench. Coming from a head coach position to an assistant coach, Sack says he thinks it will help him in the long run. ÒWith the jump to the SJHL, the head coaching will help me to be a better assistant coach. It will help me to alleviate stress from Mike, which gives him a chance to focus on the club as a whole and be a better team in the end,Ó he says. Before Sack was hired, the organization constantly received applications for the position. Reagan was looking for someone he was connected with. And although Sack didnÕt fit that description, he came to the Bombers highly recommended by a team scout. ÒItÕs important for me to get someone at least someone in the organization was familiar with,Ó said Reagan. Aside from having a team and coaching staff, Reagan says chemistry is huge when it comes to winning. ÒItÕs not only in the dressing room with the players, but everyone in the organization.Ó With a good season last year, both Sack and Reagan are looking forward to this season. ÒFrom top to bottom we were all on the same page,Ó said the coach. ÒQuinny (former assistant coach Clayton Quinn) was one of my good friends and we knew we had chemistry, but weÕre bringing in Trevor (this season).Ó According to Reagan, Sack made his intentions clear. ÒHe made it clear what he wants to do...and we want people who want to be there, the same as the players,Ó said Reagan. ÒHe made it clear he wanted to be here.Ó As for working on the bench with Sack, Reagan says "I donÕt see it being a problem. WeÕve talked about expectations. ÒThere are more talks to follow to get more familiar with each other,Ó said Reagan. ÒItÕs like we are going into camp together,Ó he says, in the sense that they are learning each other's habits. ÒTrevor can bring things to the organization that maybe we havenÕt had,Ó he said. ÒThatÕs no slight against Quinny, there are different dimensions to everybody.Ó With the camp just around the corner and the preseason games coming up quickly, Sack says he canÕt wait to get things going. ÒWeÕre going to hit the ground running and there is no stopping until the season is over,Ó said the new assistant coach. ÒI think the team has a real big shot at the SJHL championship this year. They were successful last year, and itÕs not far off to say they could make a run for the Royal Bank Cup this year.Ó With confidence in the dressing room already, Sack says heÕs excited, not nervous. ÒTheyÕve got great goalies, a real fast team. I donÕt see a whole lot of weakness and the camp is still a week away,Ó he said. With every adventure comes personal goals and Sack says he hopes to be able to better the team in some ways. ÒAs my first year in the SJHL, I want to learn from Mike and develop as a coach and gain experience. And I want to make the team better because IÕm here.Ó Sack gave Reagan kudos on his job so far. ÒMike has done a really great job after his first season for scouting...and I look forward to the battles at camp.Ó The Bombers main camp gets underway this weekend, but Reagan says itÕs going to be smaller this year. ÒWeÕve got a pretty good idea what the team is going to look like,Ó he says. ÒWe are pretty comfortable about the team.Ó But Reagan says there will still be a few fights for spots on the team. The Bomber organization will miss Quinn.
