Looking to improve on your basketball skills? How about increase your knowledge of the game? The Flin Flon Creighton Basketball Association will be providing a number of ways to intensify and amplify basketball development for players, coaches and officials over the next couple of months, with clinics for all three groups. Starting on November 23, the Sunday Dribblers program will be taking place at Hapnot and Parkdale schools. "We want to provide instruction and opportunities for competition for students in grades 5-9," said John Clark, president of the Association. "We are going to take the coaching expertise that we have in the area, and meet in the afternoon on Sunday. We will provide some basic instruction, and then give the players an opportunity to play. We think there will be a fair amount of fun for the kids as well. The program won't be very demanding. We want to encourage players to be involved at a young age." Players will be split into groups according to age, and will play at Hapnot and Parkdale schools from 2-4 p.m. on Sundays. The program will run until the start of the school basketball programs after Christmas. The Sunday Dribbler program is just one piece of a much larger objective, to improve the basketball level of kids through coaching and competition. The Flin Flon/Creighton Basketball Association is made of individuals with an interest in the sport. Some of them have basketball expertise, while others are there to lend a hand in other areas. The Association hopes to improve the level of play in the area by improving the level of the officiating, improving the expertise of the coaches, and providing an increased level of competition between the players. Along with the Sunday Dribblers program, a referee clinic will be held on December 5 and 6. Rod Peppler from the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials will deliver the clinic on the Friday evening and Saturday morning. Players and coaches are also welcome to attend to learn about the rules of the game. A coaches clinic will follow in The Pas on December 7, but may be offered in Flin Flon in early January. Any coaches wishing to attend either clinic can contact the Association for funding assistance. Players interested in attending the Sunday Dribblers program, or coaches and officials interested in the clinics are asked to contact Hapnot Collegiate at 687-7506 to pre register. Any parents that are interested in becoming involved with the association are invited to contact the school as well. Also on the plate of the Association is the upcoming Provincial High School Basketball Championships to be held in Flin Flon, March 19 and 20.
