After seeing the success of the track and field team last season, nearly 60 students from Creighton Community School have signed up for the sport this year. Out of 130 students eligible to participate in the sport, 58 students have signed their names up for either running, jumping, throwing or a combination of the three. Ryan Trumbley, a running coach with the Kodiaks Track and Field Team, says last season helped to bring more people in for this year. "Yes, I think so," said the coach, noting that the success makes people want to be a part of the team. "It's fun, it's a good time and (there are) a lot of students interested," he said. New this year, the Creighton Kodiaks have added hurdles to their program, along with the events from last year like javelin, long and short distance running and high jump. Looking at last year's team, there were no Grade 12 students, so the team didn't suffer any losses from graduation. With the carried over students from last year, the coaches are optimistic about this season. On the team this year, there are nearly 10 Grade 12 students as well as many students in the Grade 8 and 9 level. With more athletes interested in the sport this season, it means more time for practices. "We have to have more practices," says Trumbley, noting that it's a short season and there is a lot to be taught. "But it's also great to have a practice where more athletes are there (for) support," he says. The Kodiaks face their first meet in Melfort on May 20 before returning the next week. Both meets will be for Neesacs. From there, the team, with any athletes who qualify, will be going to Provincials Ð which will be held in Prince Albert the first weekend in June.
