Going into their road game against the Melfort Mustangs, the Bombers were looking to take away the two points and claim second place in the Itech Conference. The teams might have been tied in the standings for second place, but the Bombers were unable to pull off a win against the Mustangs Wednesday night. The home team doubled up on the Maroon and White 4-2, pushing the Bombers down to third place. Melfort got the scoring going as head coach and GM Mike Reagan put newcomer Matt Weninger between the pipes. It was an unassisted short-handed goal that got the goals rolling for the home team. And a second goal came later in the first period, making it 2-0 for the Mustangs. The Bombers fired off only six shots on David Tetrault in the first 20 minutes of play while Weninger received nine from Melfort. The second period saw a bit more action from the Bombers as they fired off 10 shots, but were unable to get past their netminder. But Harrison Tribble found the back of the net, giving the Mustangs their third goal of the night, on a power play in the middle of the second period. The Bombers were looking to get into the game in the third period as they broke the goose egg with a goal from Alex Lamontagne, assisted by Tanner Korchinski. The score sat at 3-1, and five minutes went by before Lamontagne found the net again for the Bombers, this time with help from Mathieu Lecours and David Lawrence on a power play. The score was closer than ever for the Maroon and White, but the Mustangs had other plans as they shook the mesh one last time against Weninger with an unassisted goal. Reagan pulled his goalie with nine seconds left on the clock but the team couldnÕt one get past Tetrault. In all, it was a close game for shots on net as Melfort walked away with 28 while the Bombers earned 27. Thursday night the Maroon and White traveled to Humboldt to take on the Broncos. With the Broncos sitting in first place with 37 points, as of Thursday morning, the Bombers, who had 21, were going to have to be on their game to get a win. Please see MondayÕs paper for details on the game.
