The new multipurpose sand court, in the lakeside area, is ready to be used. The court was put into place roughly two weeks ago, said City of Flin Flon's Recreation Director Brenda Russell. "People are (now) welcome to partake in any event," said Russell. With the main idea of the court being volleyball, she says it's open to other activities like building sandcastles or even stretching before exercising. Russell says it's evident the court has been used as there are footprints in the sand already. To get the ball rolling, Russell says she hopes to see a sand volleyball game, league or tournament take place. "There's a group of local beach volleyball (players) who are hoping to get a league (or) tournament going in the near future," said the Recreation Director. Looking at it from the side of the road, with its bright yellow protectors along the top of the fence, Russell says it's "unique for the community." "It looks awesome and professional," she said. As something different for Flin Flon, Russell says it would be nice to see the sport get picked up. She says the court will be open to the schools as well as the community. "I'm sure the physical education teachers will welcome that as a new activity for gym," she said. Beach volleyball has had a name made for itself in the Manitoba games. Russell says this multipurpose sand court can "be used for development of teams and players."
