Thirty-six brave souls endured rain and cold weather in the fight against heart disease for women. "It was good," says Barbara Corden, program coordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. "We would have liked to see more (participants)." With a goal of 100 participants to raise $10,000, Corden felt the $3,046.12 raised was a fair amount. "We received a donation of $250," she says. The success of the inaugural event has led to it replacing the Big Bike Ride, which Corden says has run its course. The Heart and Stroke coordinator received results from a 17-person survey saying they would participate again in the walk. Corden says to improve the event, the organization is discussing the possibility of holding it on a Sunday afternoon rather than the morning. Participants told Corden it would be more enjoyable in warmer weather and to have it take place following church services. Al Ross, who is the Brandon and area manager for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, says results were decent for the first year. "I'm fairly pleased with the turnout," Ross says. He added that more emphasis has to be given to the importance of the cause and build more awareness. Helping the event go well was the work of the organization and its volunteers. "It was well organized and hats off goes to Barb," he says. "It was pretty good," says Corden. "We had great volunteers and it went quite smooth." Corden also expressed her appreciation to the volunteers. The Mother/Daughter Walk was held at The Flinty Walking Loop on Sunday, September 25.9/30/2005
